What is BMX Racing?
BMX racing is an adrenaline-filled sprint that typically lasts around 40 seconds. Each race—known as a moto—features up to eight riders competing on a purpose-built dirt track filled with jumps, rollers, and berms. While explosive power out of the gate is important, success in BMX racing depends on far more than just strength. It’s about bike control, strategy, timing, confidence, and determination—all coming together in one fast, thrilling lap.
Who Can Take Part?
Everyone is welcome at Llynfi BMX Racing Club. One of the best things about BMX racing is its inclusivity. It’s not unusual to see entire families competing at the same event—mum, dad, and the kids can all get involved.
Age is no barrier either! We have categories for everyone, including a growing 45+ cruiser class. Whether you’re a youngster just starting out or an adult looking for a new challenge, there’s a place for you on the track.
What Kind of Bike Do I Need?
A standard BMX race bike is lightweight with 20-inch wheels, a single rear brake, and no gears—ideal for younger riders and racers under 30.
Older or taller riders might prefer a cruiser bike with 24-inch wheels. These offer more stability and are especially popular with adults transitioning from mountain bikes. Both 20-inch and 24-inch bikes are welcome at our club, with race categories for each.
Note: Freestyle bikes with stunt pegs or similar features aren’t allowed on the track for safety reasons.
Don’t worry about buying a bike right away—we have club bikes available to borrow and can help guide you through purchasing your own, whether new or second-hand.
Is It Safe?
Like all action sports, BMX carries some risk—but it’s generally safer than most people think. Protective gear has come a long way, and most riders walk away from crashes with nothing more than a few bruises.
Safety first is our motto. Full-face helmets, gloves, long sleeves and trousers are mandatory. Additional pads and body armour are highly recommended—and all are affordable and widely available.
Many of our riders are in their 40s and 50s and wouldn’t trade the excitement and camaraderie of BMX racing for anything!

What Equipment Do I Need?
To get started, you’ll need:
- A full-face helmet (loaners available)
- Long sleeves and long trousers (jeans are fine)
- Full-finger gloves
- A bike (we have bikes to try if you don’t have one yet)
We’re here to help with equipment advice, fitting, and safety tips.
Ready to Race?
Once you’ve had a few practice sessions, you’re ready to try your first race. You can choose to ride either a 20-inch or 24-inch bike, and compete in your age group.
At club and regional events, age groups may be combined to ensure full gates. Everyone gets to race, and results can still be tracked separately for rankings.
We’re part of the South West BMX Region, which hosts a fantastic series of races throughout the season, including some right here at Llynfi.
Do I Need a Licence?
For club-level and most open races, no licence is needed. To compete at the regional level and beyond, you’ll need to join British Cycling with Silver or Gold membership. To earn ranking points, you’ll also need a full race licence.
We can help walk you through the membership and licensing process.
Rider Levels: Novice vs Expert
New to BMX? You’ll start as a Novice—a class designed for riders with little or no race experience. It’s all about learning the ropes, having fun, and improving your skills.
When you’re ready for a new challenge, you can step up to Expert level. You don’t need to win every race—just a willingness to push yourself and grow.
Remember: Novice racing is about progress, not results!
Types of Racing
There’s something for everyone:
- Club Races – Friendly, relaxed, and perfect for beginners.
- Open Races – Larger local events, often with Novice categories.
- Regional Races – Competitive events where riders qualify for regional and national championships.
- National Races – The British BMX Series is the UK’s top-tier competition, open to riders who’ve competed at regional level.
What Happens on Race Day?
Each event typically follows this format:
- 3 Motos (heats) – Points are awarded based on finish position (1st = 1 point, 2nd = 2 points, etc.).
- Finals – Based on moto results, top riders progress to the next round or final.
Depending on the number of riders, there may be quarter-finals, semi-finals, and finals. Everyone gets plenty of time on the track!
In smaller categories, a grand prix format may be used, with four motos and no elimination rounds.

Don’t Want to Race? Volunteer!
Our club runs on volunteers, and we always need helping hands—whether it’s at the start gate, track marshalling, admin desk, or coaching support.
Volunteering is a great way to be part of the BMX community, even if you’re not racing. It’s fun, social, and hugely appreciated.
Please treat all volunteers and officials with respect. We’re all here to enjoy the sport and make it the best experience possible for everyone.
A Few Final Tips

- Always wear protection—especially a helmet!
- Don’t be intimidated—every expert was once a beginner
